We made it to the second Friday of 2026! Have you gotten back into the swing of playing mahj post holidays? Admittedly, this was my first game. The to-do list for the house seems never ending in my general contractors role and the laundry piles high as a mom of 4, but thinking these 5 jokers and a double mahj are a sign of good things to come.

The question often comes up, “what do you mean, blind pass?” It’s one optional aspect of the game that I find doesn’t always click without a visual demo. Taking place on the first Left and final Right of the Charleston, it’s an opportunity to pass less than 3 tiles from your rack.

This video assumes you’ve dealt and completed the first two passes of the 1st Charleston. You and another player realize you don’t have 3 tiles to pass so you set out a lower number. In this case 2. Somehow you need to make up that shortfall so the players passing 3 still receive 3 tiles at the end of the pass. You make up that shortfall by “blindly” or without looking taking a tile from those passed to you and adding it to your 2 before sending them on to your left.

Friendly reminder: all players take their own tiles, even though there is a, “dealer” - follow these steps for a smooth deal:
-All players roll dice, player with highest # is the dealer.
-Dealer rolls dice 1 more time (sometimes in a beginner lesson, we just roll 1 dice, which is what happened here.)
-Take the number rolled and count that number from the right side of the dealer’s wall. Leave that # of stacks in place and push out the remaining tiles to the left of that stack.
-Dealer takes the first four tiles (two stacks) for themselves.
-Player to the right takes 4 tiles (two stacks).
-Continue counterclockwise until all players have 12 tiles. You will need another wall to curtsy during this process, curtsy the whole wall and continue dealing from the right.
-Dealer takes top 1st and 3rd tile.
-Player to the right takes the one on the end.
-Next player takes the one on top (next tile on the end).
-Last player takes the one on the end and the bottom.

Friendly reminder: all players take their own tiles, even though there is a, “dealer” - follow these steps for a smooth deal:
-All players roll dice, player with highest # is the dealer.
-Dealer rolls dice 1 more time (sometimes in a beginner lesson, we just roll 1 dice, which is what happened here.)
-Take the number rolled and count that number from the right side of the dealer’s wall. Leave that # of stacks in place and push out the remaining tiles to the left of that stack.
-Dealer takes the first four tiles (two stacks) for themselves.
-Player to the right takes 4 tiles (two stacks).
-Continue counterclockwise until all players have 12 tiles. You will need another wall to curtsy during this process, curtsy the whole wall and continue dealing from the right.
-Dealer takes top 1st and 3rd tile.
-Player to the right takes the one on the end.
-Next player takes the one on top (next tile on the end).
-Last player takes the one on the end and the bottom.

This is a small glimpse behind the scenes of owning a small business. What they say is true, it’s not for the faint of heart!! Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity, just probably will never catch up on texts 😂. Special thanks to @threelittlesdc for letting us use her gorgeous new space, helping setup and breakdown (which is absolutely not her job) and just being the all around best 🩵. Been on the hunt for a mat that looks good with any tiles and I believe I’ve found it! These days we’re booked for 4-5 lessons a week so having mats that can be used with almost any tile set is key! @sprinkledwithpinkshop thanks for simplifying our lesson planning and making this versatile navy mat!

Arrived at my lesson yesterday and was greeted by this amazingly delicious homemade pumpkin cappuccino in this throwback mug (iykyk). It was the first pumpkin flavored thing I’ve had this season and it was *chefs kiss* - The group was so lovely, we were joined by the host’s 16 month old for a bit (he knew exactly how to rack a tile it was so precious!), and it was just all the good things about this business. I’ll never stop marveling at the number of kind, cool, incredibly lovely humans I’ve met through Mahjong. Thanks for inviting us into your homes and letting us share this special game with you. 🩵🩵🩵

Birthday mahjong lessons are always so fun, but the icing on the cake is when the party group features DC pals you’ve acquired along your 15 years of Capitol Hill living! We love all of DC, but there’s no community quite like Capitol Hill ❤️ It’s supported me through my first big girl job, marriage, deployments, motherhood, deployment with kids, loss and new beginnings(I’m looking at you pandemic 🌈 twins) and now, over the last almost 2 years, building community through mahjong!

Play all the Mahj you can at all the events you can, I’m cheering for you no matter where you play 💕- AND, more than likely the person you played with is a friend and I’m rooting for them too!!
